Aubade I
Mixed media on canvas
10" x 10"
A tall, upright pool of yellow fills most of the canvas, glowing brightest at its lime green heart and dotted with tiny pinholes where air rose through the wet paint. On the left, the dark ground opens into marbled swirls of pewter, gold and soft teal, curling like mist over water before dawn. The edges of the yellow are clean and decisive, the background soft and drifting. Mandie set the color free and let it spread across the dark ground, settling into a shape no one could have planned. It reads like the first light rising over a sleeping landscape, a bright and simple song for the start of day.
Morning songs belong in morning rooms. Hang it where you have your first coffee, or on a bedroom wall facing east, and let the yellow and pewter catch the early sun. It is lovely on its own and even better grouped with the other Aubade panels.

Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
