Bittersweet
Mixed media on panel
16" x 16"
Sweetness and sorrow share the same horizon. Above, a glowing sky moves from cobalt blue through emerald into a warm golden yellow, with dark green drips falling gently from the arc where the colors meet. A band of vivid red runs across the middle like the last flare of sunset. Below, a deep indigo sea stretches out, dusted with a spray of white speckles and darkened with smoky black, as if night were already rising from the water. The upper surface is sprayed and slightly gritty, the lower one alive with splatter and grain. Mandie sprayed, dripped and flicked the paint, letting each layer surprise her. It holds the bittersweet beauty of a day ending, both glorious and a little sad.
Generous in scale for this collection, it makes a lovely focal point in a living room, a dining area or above a console in the hall. The cobalt, emerald and red glow with walnut, brass and deep green velvet, especially in warm evening light.

The Collections
Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
