Brave Crossing
Mixed media on panel
24" x 6"
Dark shapes of black and deep plum gather at the top and bottom of this narrow panel, marbled with veins of silver gray like storm clouds or rough water. Yet bright colors cling to them and cut right through: a wavy line of golden yellow, a blaze of coral red, small loops of cobalt and touches of green. Between the two clusters, the pale ground stretches open, the space that must be crossed. The surface is glossy and crowded with tiny cells and ridges. Mandie poured the dark first and let the brights find their way across it. It honors the courage it takes to step into uncertain waters with light still in hand.
Bold and moody, it makes a statement in a narrow entry, a den or a powder room with dark walls. The plum, silver and gold look dramatic with black paint, smoked glass and brass, and they glow when lit by a picture light.

The Collections
Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
