Downstream, Laughing
Mixed media on panel
12" x 12"
A river of color rushes on a long diagonal, from the bottom left toward the upper right, laughing all the way. At its heart, a bright red current is full of glossy cells and little swirls, carried along by wide banks of orange and gold that fray into speckled foam. Thin green borders and broad strokes of cobalt and indigo frame the flow, as if the shore were moving too. The white ground beneath has dried into fine, delicate cracks, like a riverbed in summer. Mandie set the colors loose on a slope, then stepped back to watch them race and craze as they dried. It is lively, playful and full of carefree joy.
Good humor runs all through this lively piece, which brings movement to a narrow kitchen wall, a home office or a gallery wall of small works. Its bright currents pair nicely with river stones, green plants and clean pale shelving, keeping the energy fresh and light.

Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
