Idyll
Mixed media on panel
24" x 18"
Calm, sunlit and quietly content, this painting feels like a summer afternoon by the water. Soft blocks of cobalt, turquoise, sunny yellow, pale lilac and sea green sit together like a patchwork of fields and sky. Across them, scattered pigment powders leave raised, sandy textures: a band of plum granules over the yellow, a creamy speckled column on the right, a mound of teal grit with a small shining stone in the lower corner. White splashes skip across the top like spray from a wave. Mandie let the powders fall where they would and pressed them into the wet paint, welcoming each unexpected texture. The piece is peaceful, tactile and full of gentle joy.
Living with this painting is a bit like keeping a summer afternoon on hand all year. It would be at home in a breakfast room or a lake house sitting room, with whitewashed wood, striped cushions, rattan chairs and a jug of garden flowers on the table.

Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
