Joy, Unexpected
Mixed media on panel
40" x 30" x 2.5"
Bold diagonals cut across the upper panel, a stripe of sunny yellow, a band of sky blue, a wide stretch of soft gray edged with a jagged, sawtooth line, then deep slate. And then, at the bottom, delight bursts in. A cluster of lime green shapes rises like a playful little garden, crowned by a round, buttery yellow bloom, while a molten pour of red, magenta and orange swims along the lower edge. Fine wavy ridges ripple across the background, and a few thin blue lines run through it like threads of rain. Mandie let the poured forms spread as they pleased, and they arrived with the charm of a happy accident. It is a painting about the gladness that finds you when you least expect it.
Here is a painting for a wall that needs a lift. Hang it above a sofa or a long console in a living room, where its crisp diagonals feel modern and its burst of lime brings a smile. Gray upholstery and green plants make easy partners.

The Collections
Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
