Light in Dark Water
Mixed media on panel
12" x 16"
Deep in a dark, glossy surface, light breaks through. A shadowed mass of black covers much of the panel, ridged and pooled like night water under a moonless sky. At its center, color erupts: a bright streak of hot pink and tangerine, a pale white glow, and sky blue cells that bubble outward in lacy rings. Flecks of lime and chartreuse surface along the edges, and a hush of violet waits in the upper corner. Mandie poured the layers and let them push against one another, each color finding its way through the dark on its own. It is a painting about hope that will not stay hidden.
In a dark walled study, a powder room, or a reading nook, Light in Dark Water truly shines. Charcoal paint, black metal, and a focused picture light bring out its glossy depth and the small break of light at its center, especially after sunset.

Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
