Melancholy, Lightly
Mixed media on panel
48" x 48"
Across a pale, natural ground, blue arrives in many moods. On the left, a tall panel of lace-like pattern glows white over deep and sky blues, delicate as frost on a window. Beside it, a field of small cobalt marks gathers like a crowd of raindrops, and on the right, thick blue strokes are pulled downward in long, heavy streaks, as if the sky had decided to weep. Yet brightness keeps breaking through: a warm square of orange, a splash of lime that drips toward the floor, a touch of soft sky at the edge. Mandie pressed, sprayed and dragged the paint, letting textures and drips form their own patterns. The painting holds sorrow gently, and lets hope sit right beside it.
On a gray afternoon, its many moods of blue feel especially companionable. Bring it into a reading room, a study or a bedroom, with pale wood, blue-and-white ceramics and a cozy wool throw to keep the mood gentle and wistful.

The Collections
Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
