Ritornello
Mixed media on panel
40" x 30" x 2.5"
Familiar colors return again and again, like a beloved refrain. Teal, aqua and turquoise drip down the left side in long, glistening lines; a single bold stroke of cobalt falls straight through the middle; and electric lime threads its way through a collage of soft blocks in coral, hot pink, tangerine and pale gold. A circle of misty sea green glows near the center like a rising sun seen through water. Layers of sprayed and poured color overlap, some glossy, some velvety, each one partly hiding the one before. Mandie built the surface slowly and intuitively, adding and covering and rediscovering. The painting feels like a happy memory that keeps coming back.
Above an entry console or a long dining sideboard, it brings bright, layered rhythm to everyday arrivals. Aqua glassware, a lime green vase and pale oak furniture pick up its palette, and a pendant overhead will catch its glistening drips.

The Collections
Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
