Rubato
Mixed media on panel
30" x 24"
Freedom runs through every line of this painting. A warm apricot sky glows across the top, giving way to bright lemon yellow and soft lilac, while heavy cobalt pours down the center in thick, tangled strands that bend and sway as they fall. To the left, a cloud of pale sky blue releases thin turquoise drips; to the right, coral and violet blur into a hazy shadow. Fine threads of paint loop and wander along the top edge like handwriting. Mandie let the pours take their own time, speeding up and slowing down as the panel tilted, and the painting breathes with that easy, elastic rhythm. It is warm, spontaneous and full of feeling.
Morning light suits this painting best, catching the apricot glow along its top and the thick cobalt strands below. Hang it in a breakfast room or over a writing desk, alongside honey-toned walnut, a lilac throw and a jar of fresh flowers on the sill.

Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
