Swept Away
Mixed media on panel
12" x 9"
Out of deep darkness, a vivid yellow vortex spins open. Its center is a fine, lacy network of gold veins, ringed by rippling bands that circle outward like water stirred by a stone, and around it a fiery spray of yellow bursts into the night. A shadow of navy blue swirls just beneath, hinting at depth and motion. Everything else falls away into black. Mandie poured the center and let it craze and spread on its own, then sprayed the brilliant glow around it with quick, energetic movements. The painting has the pull of a whirlpool and the brightness of a flare, a small, intense moment of being carried off by feeling.
Small but magnetic, this little vortex can hold its own on a bookshelf, a desk, or among a cluster of frames on a gallery wall. Dark wood, a brass lamp, and a few treasured objects around it will make its golden center glow even brighter.

Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
