Taking Flight II
Mixed media on canvas
12" x 4"
Squares of burlap are stitched together across the canvas like a patchwork map of the sky. At the center, one square is washed in deep cobalt, its weave standing out in a fine grid, while around it, diagonal sweeps of sky blue and indigo race across rougher cloth and smooth cream ground. The coarse fibers catch the paint in tiny ridges, giving every stroke a living, tactile edge. Mandie gathered simple woven scraps and brushed them with color in fast, decisive motions, letting the fabric shape each mark. The piece feels light and spirited, full of the quiet courage it takes to rise and keep going.
A shelf, a mantel or a small hallway wall is all this little patchwork of blue needs. Surround it with woven baskets, a ceramic vase and a stack of books, or hang it beside Taking Flight I so the two can be enjoyed as a pair.

The Collections
Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
