Tangled Thoughts
Mixed media on panel
14" x 14"
A dark, inky mass fills the center, and through it run crisscrossing lattices like windows that open onto light. Behind the tangled bars glow mint, lemon and soft peach, glimpsed in small panes as if through a fence or a net. Along the edges, streaks of yellow and pink flare outward, refusing to be contained. The black surface is rough and grainy, flecked with spray and small bubbles, while the brighter shapes beneath stay smooth and luminous. Mandie layered the darkness over color and then worked her way back in, uncovering the light piece by piece. It feels like a mind working through its knots and finding brightness hidden in the middle of them.
Hung above a writing desk or in a creative studio, it feels like a fitting companion for busy, brilliant minds. Its inky lattice and glints of mint and peach look sharp on a soft gray wall, with black metal shelving and a few bright books.

Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
