Unruly Joy
Mixed media on panel
10" x 10"
At the center, a crusty knot of charcoal and dark brown sits like a storm cloud, but it cannot hold back what is bursting out around it. Magenta, cobalt, sky blue, lime and tangerine erupt in thick, raised swirls across a saffron yellow ground, while black shapes and teal spray crowd the edges. The surface is wonderfully physical: lumpy, ridged, glossy in some places and gritty in others, so it changes with every shift of light. Mandie piled on layers, poured, pressed and sprayed, letting each one react to the last in ways she could never predict. Compact as it is, the painting brims with irrepressible delight, a joy that refuses to behave.
Need a little lift on a gray Monday? Set this lively piece on a desk or kitchen shelf where you will catch it often. Its saffron and jewel tones sing against charcoal or deep navy paint and hold their own beside black frames and bold ceramics.

Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
