Old Friend
Mixed media on panel
24" x 24"
Fine golden threads of scratched line cover this warm taupe panel, crossing and circling in a dense web, gathering into soft spirals as if traced over and over by a thoughtful hand. Small dark screws are scattered across the surface like stars or old rivets, and near the top right, a torn patch opens to reveal a pale layer beneath, peering out like a kindly eye. The longer you look, the more a gentle face seems to rise from the lines, familiar and unhurried. Mandie scored the surface patiently, then let the wood and the marks speak together. Spending time with it is like the company of someone who has known you for years.
Comforting and familiar, Old Friend feels like it has always been part of the house. Place it in a library, a living room corner, or above a favorite armchair, with walnut, worn leather, and soft taupe textiles to echo its golden web.

Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
