Taking Flight I
Mixed media on canvas
12" x 4"
Patches of rough burlap tilt and overlap across this slender canvas like feathers lifting on a breeze. Cobalt and sky blue are brushed boldly over the woven fiber, catching on every thread so the color looks both soft and rugged, while gaps of creamy cloth let the light through. The patches point in different directions, angled like wings opening, and the strokes of blue sweep with them, quick and sure. Mandie cut, layered and painted these humble pieces of fabric, letting the texture of the weave decide how the color would settle. The result feels airy and brave, the small, thrilling moment when something leaves the ground for the very first time.
Small and slender, it fits easily on a bookshelf, a narrow wall beside a window or a desk. Its rustic burlap and cobalt look lovely with jute, rattan and blue-and-white ceramics, and it pairs beautifully with its companion piece, Taking Flight II.

The Collections
Pigment breaks loose across the surface, feathered forms climbing through bands of color, caught in the instant before they open all the way.
Paint falls in continuous vertical streams, layer over layer, color caught mid-descent before it ever reaches the ground.
At the edge of the visible world, resin, pigment powders, and luminous forms suggest planetary landscapes no one has named yet.
Immediate, unguarded and alive. Color erupts, gestures cut across fields of pattern, painting as a way of releasing what words cannot hold.
Burlap, plaster, and mixed media hold the memory of surfaces worn by time, artifacts of a history that was never written down.
Pigment flows in channels across white ground, color finding its own path the way water finds a bed to run through.
Pigment pools and cracks across the surface, veined like a lakebed or a membrane, ground still settling into its shape.
